The game looks excellent, blending the iconic "gotta go fast" gameplay of classic Sonic titles with the pre-rendered 3D graphics you'd find in Donkey Kong Country. ![]() #SonicTheHedgehog #gamedev /xMrnPOAGmO- The Controller's February 19, 2023 After a full week of working, I've sorta completed a level for a DKC inspired Sonic fangame! The name's "Super Sonic System", and this first planet's called "Green Passageway".įirst time ever I've finished level design btw. The franchise has crossed paths with multiple genres across the decades, from its humble beginnings as a 2D platformer to the latest "open-zone" 3D title Sonic Frontiers, and everything in between.īut what would happen if you took the concept of classic 2D Sonic and mixed it with the core aesthetics of Donkey Kong Country? Well, as spotted by our good pals over on Time Extension, you'd get Super Sonic System, a brand new fan-made game from who has successfully completed building a stage called 'Green Passageway'. But looking at what various Nintendo and Nintendo-adjacent studios have been up to the last few years, I don't think it should be that surprising that we haven't seen anything DK-related in a while.Sonic the Hedgehog is no stranger to change. I'm hopeful that, with DKC's 30th anniversary looking to line up with the DK expansion at the theme parks opening (and potentially a DK spin-off movie being in the works), we'll see something from the series relatively soon. The people who would be working on DK are busy, there seemingly isn't anybody free to drop everything and start working on DK (aside from rumors that the 3D Mario team is actually working on a DK game), and they probably haven't been able to find a good fit for an external studio who could take over making DK games in the meantime. Then, post-Tropical Freeze, Retro was seemingly in development hell on some unknown project before being put on the rebooted Prime 4 a couple years ago. Meanwhile, DK had a "home" with Rare for a while and then went dormant for years before getting picked up by Retro. And many of those are 3rd party studios who's survival kinda depends on continuing to make successful entries in those series (like, HAL's gotta keep the lights on, and making Kirby games is how they do that). there's a dedicated 3D Mario team, Gamefreak makes Pokemon, IntSys makes Fire Emblem, HAL makes Kirby, Platinum makes Bayonetta, and one team alternates between Splatoon and Animal Crossing. TBH that's usually the answer to "Why hasn't gotten a new game lately" questions.Īll those other series you bring up have dedicated "homes" with various developers. I mean, the boring-but-likeliest answer is there's just been no one free to do one.
